For those of you who don’t know, my boss is sponsoring a weight loss contest at work. Over 30 of us entered the contest and plucked down our $100 entry fee. If we want the $100 back, we have to lose 10% (ladies are 8%) of our weight in 12 weeks.
The total pot will be made up of the $100 forfeits of those who don’t hit their goal plus $1,000 from the boss. The winners are determined by percentage of weight lost over the 12 weeks of the program. The winner gets 50% of the po
t, 2nd place 30% and 3rd place 20%.
This contest is now 10 weeks old with only 2 weeks left. However, I knew when it started that I would do well. Why did I know this? I am a competitor. I love to win and I hate 2nd place. What I didn’t know is how much I would learn about myself along the way.
Six years ago, I dropped from 260 to 229 pounds during the course of a summer. However, I let all of that weight (and then some) get added back on. I started this contest the day after the Super Bowl at a whopping 294.4 pounds. Of course, a couple of pounds of that is clothes since I’m weighing publicly. But, two-ninety anything is too freaking close to 300. At 5′11″, my “ideal” weight is 179 lbs. Even though I think that number is ridiculously low, it still shows that I was more than 110 lbs overweight.
That should catch you up to speed about the contest and where I started. Next, I can update you on where I am and what I’ve learned.
